🌳 Play, learning and early years

AJ Davis Reserve Playspace

Moonee Valley Community Playgroups

Volunteer-run groups give parents and carers a relaxed way to connect while children aged 0–5 play. Groups meet in Airport West, commonly during school terms. Families can try a session before joining, and small fees may apply.

Airport West Early Learning Cooperative

This not-for-profit community childcare centre welcomes children from three months to school age. Rooms cater for infants aged three months to two years, toddlers aged 2–4 and kindergarten-aged children aged 3–5. Families interested in a place can join the waitlist.

Moonee Valley Libraries Children’s Programs

Nearby branches in Avondale Heights, Niddrie and elsewhere offer Baby Rhyme Time up to 18 months, Toddler Time for 18 months–3 years and Preschool Storytime for ages 3–5. Early-years sessions run during school terms without bookings. After-school clubs for ages 5–12 require bookings.

🏃 Junior sport and youth connections

Airport West Football Club Juniors

Boys and girls can take part in junior AFL from under 8s through to under 18.5s. Training and games are organised by age group, with home matches at Hansen Reserve and Etzel Street Oval. Check current registration, training and fixture arrangements with the club.

Airport Saints Netball Club

Young players can begin with Net at ages 5–6 before progressing through Set, Go and under-age teams. Junior training takes place at Bowes Avenue in Airport West, while match venues depend on the team and competition.

Valley Youth Groups and Programs

Young people aged 12–25 can explore music, art and creative-industry experience through Avenue Productions, join Grassroots environmental activities or contribute to the Young People’s Committee. Rainbow Valley holds fortnightly social meet-ups for LGBTIQA+ young people aged 15–25. Some activities require registration or a conversation before attending.

🤝 Developmental and family support

Beyond Perception

This speech-pathologist-run Airport West service supports children, adolescents and young adults aged 0–20. Areas include speech sounds, language, play, social communication, literacy foundations, AAC, stuttering and situational mutism. Depending on funding and individual needs, sessions may be available at the clinic, home, school, early learning setting or by telehealth.

Moonee Valley Maternal and Child Health Service

Local families can access maternal and child health care, new parent groups and breastfeeding support through council. The Airport West centre is temporarily closed for redevelopment until early 2028, with nearby centres available in Avondale Heights, Keilor East and other suburbs. Free breastfeeding sessions are by appointment through an MCH nurse.

Moonee Valley Strengthening Families

Families living in Moonee Valley with children aged 0–17 can seek case-management assistance. Support may cover parenting, child development, practical and emotional needs, family communication and connections to community resources. In-person assistance is available in languages other than English.

Moonee Valley Supported Playgroups

Eligible families with children from birth to school age can attend free, facilitated playgroups during school terms in nearby suburbs including Avondale Heights and Strathmore. Eligibility criteria apply, and in-home coaching may also be offered through the program.

✅ Before you go

  • Ask about current fees, schedules, match venues and school-term dates.
  • Discuss accessibility, communication or participation needs directly with the provider.
  • Confirm whether a parent or carer must remain and supervise.
